No changes in peak horsepower but torque got a healthy bump and the midrange filled in more.

The M3 cams are torque monsters, even on 91 octane. Peak boost was only 23.5 psi.

E85 (15% gasoline and 85% ethanol) is making it’s way to the Bay Area so now I can finally play around with it.

To use E85 on the Evo, the fuel system needs to be upgraded to meet the increased fueling needs of E85. For stock or variant turbos, a upgraded fuel pump (that most have already) and 1000cc injectors will usually be enough.

The biggest advantage of using E85 is increased octane (some say around 105 octane), increased cylinder cooling from the ethanol and price.

After filling up today with E85, I set to rescaling the injectors for it and did some quick tweaking on the street. So far E85 seems to really love timing. I am using 6 degrees more ignition advance in the higher RPM area over VP 100 oct and it seems to want even more. I will be throwing the car on the dyno this week to see what we can see. The car definitely feels much more powerful so far.

I’ll be updating this site as I do more work with E85. It’s a pretty exciting fuel to be using.

Evo 9 stock potential

Here is a 100% bone stock Evo 9 with only our base flash on it.

Our base flash is as close to a “one size fits all” map we offer for 100% stock Evo 9’s. This is not a custom tune, just flash and go, the only thing I did was do three pulls back to back to make sure it was running correctly and the AFR looked good.

Three pulls back to back with our base flash:

As you can see, it is consistent and gives a good “kick” to a otherwise stock Evo 9.

Here is our base flash overlayed on the same car with the factory map. Factory map is the dotted plot:

The biggest gain with our base flash is 6600 rpm and up, where the factory map takes a nose dive because of a very rich AFR. In this case, it is a 47whp gain going to our base flash over the factory map. Peak torque gains of 22wtq, approx 37wtq up top and a large gain to spool over the factory map.

Boost is unchanged from the factory map as the factory boost system is already running at 100% duty cycle from the factory. AFR with our Base Flash is approx 11.4 to 11.0 AFR.

If this is something you are interested in for you stock Evo 9, please don’t hesitate to contact me.

What happens when we are bored on a Saturday night at the...

What happens when we are bored on a Saturday night at the shop…

Evo 9 RS

Three pulls back to back after tune was finalized. Be it HPDE or actual timed competition.

One of the services I offer is full real-world data logging and tuning, at the track or autocross.

Our dyno works great at simulating real-world load the car sees. We specifically set it up so that it matches street load. However, custom dyno tune only goes so far.

For the true advantage, especially in a competition setting, nothing compares to full track side support using the latest datalogging and tuning tools at my disposal. This will make your car perform 100%, safely and with great power, custom tuned for the exact weather / day / altitude your car is performing in.

Here is an example of the type of information I log from my tools, from our sponsored Redline Time Attack street class Evo 9, at 4300ft, in Utah at Miller Motorsport park:

All the important information logged over three laps around Miller Motorsport park:

Wideband AFR
Ignition Timing
Engine Load and Airflow
Intake Air Temp
Engine Water Temp
Knock Counts
TPS / RPM / Speed
Boost
Etc

I use all this data, usually during test and tune sessions before the actual race, to custom tailor the tune to perform at it’s best when it counts, the timed event.

For inquires on this service, please don’t hesitate to contact me to discuss.

Tuning for the real world..

While pretty dyno sheets are great, there is nothing more rewarding than seeing my work in real world action, and doing well.

Unfortunatly the turbo ended up being blown so we had to pull it off the dyno to swap turbos. Swapped the turbo and it ended up having a bad starter so it wouldn’t start unless we push started it. Obviously I couldn’t push start it on the dyno so it will be coming back next week to finish up the tune.

See below

Evo 9 retune for cosworth M3 cams

Evo 9 back in for a retune after swapping his Cosworth M2 (272/272) for Cosworth M3 (280/272) cams.

Put it back on the dyno and it didn’t make any power gains, it was actually down on torque since last time, which was very odd since he want to a larger intake cam. The last three times this car has been on the dyno it never really made any gains. I knew at this point something was wrong with this Evo.

Took it off the dyno and did a boost leak test. Found a fairly large leak at the FMIC to upper IC pipe connection. Fixed that. Then found another one at the Upper IC pipe to BOV connection. Fixed that and no more boost leaks.

Put it back on the dyno and finally found the car running correctly. Amazing what a couple boost leaks can do to the power eh?

Dotted lines are with all the same mods but with the boost leaks, Solid lines are after fixing the boost leaks and retuning the car for it.

Mods:

TBE 3” no cat
GST open air filter
RC 750cc injectors
Walboro Fuel Pump
Ported OEM exhaust manifold
Cosworth M3 Mivec Cams
ARP head studs
Springs and retainers
GM 3 port boost solenoid using ECU controlled boost
Nisei FMIC
LICP
91 octane
GST Custom dyno tune (oem ecu flash)

For some reference, here is what the car did with the M2 cams and all the same mods above:
